ENGLISH SCHOOLS SAINSBURYS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, SEFTON PARK, LIVERPOOL, 8 MARCH 2008
SCHOOLS SILVERWARE SUCCESS AT SEFTON
Surrey Schools had its greatest success for many years at the English Schools XC Championships. Trophies were won by the Junior Girls ( Winning Team), Intermediate Girls (Winning team) and Junior Boys (First to close all 8 runners). The Junior boys just faltered short of third place by two points, but team manager Alister Moses was delighted with the trophy - " because it shows strength in depth"
International selection was gained by
Emelia Gorecka ( 1st place)  Junior Girls
Ruth Haynes (2nd place) Junior Girls
Jonny Hay (1st place) Intermediate Boys
Isabel Brinsden (8th place) Intermediate Girls
Contingent Team Manager, Jeff Manson was highly delighted with the days business.  "It gives great credit to the preparation given by the athletes, coaches and their parents to perform at such a high level, and come away with the recognition they all deserve. The whole squads supported each other in what was a deceptively hard course. Conditions were relatively firm underfoot, the rain that was forcast arrived for the final race of the day, the Senior boys, adding a bit more than a challenge to the race.
We send all our good wishes with those who are representing England at the Home International in Perth, in two weeks time"
The complete results, and photographs, can be viewed on the English Schools website.

CHARLIE WALKER 1929-2008
Belgrave Harriers have announced the death of their President, Charlie Walker on 13 January 2008. Charlie’s career was a prodigious one to say the least. He ran with success at the top level of competition when this country’s middle and long distance runners were household names and second to none! He was a regular entrant for the County One Mile Championship in the early 1950s. In any other period he would no doubt have gained himself full international honours.
Further details, including Funeral arrangements, will be published on the Belgrave Harriers website.

DOUG GOODMAN 9.3.1919 – 24.1.2008
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Doug Goodman. He died whilst playing golf near his home in Salisbury. He gave long service to athletics through his club, Herne Hill Harriers; with Surrey County and nationally.
Doug was a reliable cross country runner for Herne Hill Harriers without ever achieving huge success. As an administrator however he achieved great heights. He rose from the club's cross country secretary during the early 1950s when the club enjoyed great success to become Surrey County secretary and later Surrey County President & Southern Counties AAA President following in the steps on his brother Ron. He was team manager of the England team for the 1970 Edinburgh, 1974 Christchurch & 1978 Edmonton Commonwealth Games teams & also managed the 1978 Great Britain team for the European Championships in Prague & 1976 Olympics Games teams in Montreal. An extremely distinguished & likeable man who had a kind word for everyone Doug will be sadly missed to all that knew him
