ELLIE BONGERS -
It is with great sadness that we learn of the death, following a car accident, of Ellie Bongers. She died on Christmas Eve and her son Joseph, aged 15 months, is critically ill in a hospice where Nigel, Paula and Hannah are currently staying. Ellie won the Surrey Under 17 Cross Country Championship in 1993 and came 11th in the Schools National X Country Champs. In recent times in her 30's she had resumed running a few times a week & recently competed in a 10k. Her partner Richard survived the crash with a fractured hand and was very brave as the car caught fire but he got them out despite his clothes being alight - unfortunately it was to no avail.
Nigel has said "There have been amazing tributes to Ellie from the headmaster at the comprehensive where Ellie taught - to view look at www.thisoxfordshire.co.uk/news/4828501 and the pupils set up a facebook page Ms Bongers Appreciation."
DAVID LITTLEWOOD MBE - Congratulations to David Littlewood (Hercules Wimbledon AC) on receiving an MBE in the New Years Honours for 'voluntary service to Athletics'. As well as his regular attendance as an official at our County Championships, David has also served the English Schools Athletic Association, UK Athletics and the IAAF. He is acknowledged as an expert on the rules governing our sport.

ANDY GLOVER -
Andy Glover, one of Surrey's most respected officials, died after a long illness on December 5th, aged 72.
Andy, who was a member of Croydon Harriers, served as Surrey president in 2000, but was best known as an indefatigable starter officiating at meetings from school and club up to international level. It was not unusual for him to be out starting meetings up to 14 days on the trot during the hectic summer season partly because he frequently came to the rescue of clubs struggling to find a starter for their meetings. He was favoured by timekeepers because he made up his own ammunition and was able to provide a good visible signal.
His daughter, Sharon, represented Surrey over 400m and 400m hurdles and won four county titles in the 1980's.
His son, Gavin, competed over 800m/1500m and High Jump in the County Championships in the 1980's.
Initially, Andy was a coach, and at one time advised Jeina Mitchell and Julie Mitchell (no relation). Apart from his involvement with Surrey County he was also officials secretary for the Surrey Schools Athletics Association and the UK Women's League. He was also a former member of England Athletics' London Regional Council.
Despite his serious illness, Andy continued to take an interest in athletics and even attended the county championships at Kingsmeadow in the summer. He also chaired the championships sub-committee and managed to attend a meeting for the final time in July.
"Andy was a popular and highly respected official and starter with a dry sense of humour. He clearly loved his involvement with our sport and made many friends through it. With his sad passing Surrey and the wider sport of athletics has lost a dedicated and hard-working servant," said Surrey president Tom Pollak. "Our sincere sympathy goes to his partner Joan, his daughter Sharon and all of his family."
The funeral was held at Leatherhead Crematorium at 3:30pm on Thursday, 17th December 2009 with around 200 people in attendance. Joan has requested that there should only be family flowers. If people would like to make a donation instead she asks that they should go to the Princess Alice Hospice at Esher West End where Andy spent his last few days. Attached is a donation form. If used this gives maximum benefit to the charity through Gift Aid.
